Yesterday my hubby came full circle to add yet another candle to his cake which is fast running out of space. I think number candles will do for next years cake.
I’m not sure how as a child my husband celebrated birthdays as in his adult years, he seems to dread the day and the build up to it. I’ve learnt over the years that even though he says there are to be no presents or cake, he actually really wants to be spoilt. Who doesn’t! One year – I left his birthday, didn’t arrange anything as per his request. Geewizz, to this day he has not let me forget. I have learnt from that that regardless of his huffs and puffs, I always make his day a special one and he is clearly appreciative of it. My mother tells me it’s a ‘man’ thing. No mom, I know my husbands love languages. Having said that – upon his arrival home to a tribe of excited children, we spoilt him with his long awaited mountain bike, espresso machine and yummy chocolate cake before dinner! The evening routine was whacked but worth it.
So a the big 36 arrived yesterday. Where have the years gone! They seem to fly faster as we age more. We seem to appreciate life more and more as we realise just how short, fast and fragile life really is. We no longer take the simple things like health and time foregranted either.
I raise my glass in celebration of a fantastic husband and father, who has held my hand, although at times a little tighter, as we walk through this journey we share. As I put it to friends – we have good months and bad days but love covers all our sins. Here’s to many blessed, wild and happy years ahead. Happy Birthday my McDreamy, you rock my world.
My ‘Happy Birthday SunshineMac’ doodle from Google today – was a lovely surprise when I logged on. Thank you to the Google team, super sweet. 21 at heart forever 😉
The garden, the best playground for a little boy.
On October the 24th we celebrated our baby boys first birthday. A whole 365 days young. This little man of ours has brought so much love into our home, we are truly blessed to have welcomed him in our lifes journey. He wakes up smiling, laughs so easily at all and sundry, happy after a long adventurous day to cuddle with good night hugs and prayers before he lay in his cot ready to slip into his pleasant dream land.
Mr and I were up till the wee hours of the night baking his chocolate cake, we decided on a construction party theme. Not only is his grand-pops a Diesel Mechanic working on machines such as Diggers but it was a boy theme we hadn’t done yet after 14 years of ‘boy party’ planning. It was a fun filled day with water slides, braai and good friends (seeing as of the 14 million people living in Gauteng – not a single one is family !!) Happy Birthday our little man – we love you to the moon and back, always.
Digger Cake – Icing a fresh chocolate cake was no childs play.
Today is my little brothers birthday. Funny how we still call him our little brother when he is in his 30’s. Of all my siblings – I have a super special bond with my brother. I love most how we share the same wicked sense of humour and when we do a conference skype call with my mom, the house is on fire. No distance or continent or hemisphere can keep us apart. South Africa & The UK, no contest 😉
How awesome is my little brother ? Beyond awesome,so awesome in-fact that he called me up in 2008 and said, ‘how’s your passport looking?’ Why, I ask. ‘cos I’m online booking your ticket to the UK to tour England with mom and I – all expenses paid !!’ THAT’s HOW AWESOME MY BROTHER IS *massive smile*
I miss him most on days like this, not that any other day do I miss him any less. It’s the late nights up sipping coffee, while olden goldies hit the music box & we chat and chat and chat away. Laughter fills the air and conversation flows. I know mom baked his favourite chocolate cake today, where I joke he is lucky he doesn’t have to share it. A good ol’ braai, music, family, friends and Johnny Walker would have been the order of the day. Think I would have hit the Amarula somewhat.
Here’s to you my little brother, whom I love more than I can ever put in words. We share incredible history, a lifes’ journey and an indescribable bond. Thank you for always being my rock, my counsellor, my bail out, my brother. You’ve taught me never to sweat the small stuff cos it’s all small stuff indeed, self love and just how worth it I am. BIG, HUGE, GIGANTIC HUGS *mwah* from your bestest sister ever 🙂
Mom’s Smartie Cake
Another crafty post. This would be the most delicious cake I have ever made. Not the most spectacular but by far the one that didn’t last past the hour. Knowing all thing chocolate are where it’s at in my house, for fathers day I decided to try this one out for my special man. After baking a lovely moist chocolate cake and icing it of course with chocolate icing. I used a party pack of Chomp bars, you could use anything similar like Kit-Kats or such for the sides. I topped the cake with smarties and lots of. I think overseas M&M’s would be similar – anything that is candy coated chocolate buttons will do all the same. Both my big and small boys LOVED LOVED LOVED this cake so much so I had a request to repeat it for Austin’s birthday a few day later. Give it a try, no doubt it will be a hit in your home too.
This has got to be the fastest, easiest and simplest nappy cake I’ve ever put together. Yet another baby shower gift for a friend expecting her first baby girl, the request was for nappies and plenty of. This time I decided to go with 2 sizes up instead of newborn. Reasons being, no doubt she will have plenty if not too many of the newborn size and secondly, a few sizes up would mean she would not have to dismantle the cake immediately. I went about it as follows:
- A trip to the baby store entailed a double bag of diapers/nappies. Rubber bands, Pink ribbon, a round cake board, tissue paper, a teddy and a surprise gift of a non-alcoholic bottle of bubbly aka champagne.
- Wrap the cake board with the tissue paper using sellotape or small press pins neaten it off underneath.
- Sausage roll the diapers and fasten with a rubber band, do this with the whole pack.
- Placing the bottle of champagne in the center of the cake board which helps too as a pillar when assembling the diapers around it. Build your first tier as wide as possible. As you assemble diapers forming rings around the bottle, use rubber band to hold them together. Continue until your cake board is pretty much filled.
- Repeat this process for the second tier using one less final ring, and again for the final tier on the third tier.
- Top the third tier with the teddy bear.
- Lastly I used the pink ribbon to wrap around the tiers then glue on some silk flowers and butterflies. Looking back – next time I would rather a darker colour ribbon to hide the rubber bands.
